Women who have the support of a professional doula during labor benefit from the following:
  • Significantly less use of medical “interventions,” including pain medication, labor inducement, C-section, forceps or vacuum delivery, episiotomies, etc.
  • Personal empowerment and greater involvement in any necessary decisions
  • Shorter labor
  • Reduced anxiety throughout (for the mother as well as the father/birth partner)
  • Decreased incidence of postpartum depression and ‘baby blues’
  • Greater ease in breastfeeding

I am currently on extended hiatus while other projects come to fruition. I would still love to answer any questions you may have, or chat babies. Feel free to email me! For doula care, please contact my good friend and amazing doula Samanta Zipporah at Zipporah Doula Services.

A Doula's Role

Whether this is your first child or your fifth, a doula can help make your birth the experience you want it to be.  ‘Doula’ is a Greek word used to describe the main female attendant of a household.  Today, a doula is a trained and experienced childbirth assistant.  Not medically licensed, doulas do not replace nurses or other medical personnel; they rather enhance communication between everyone involved and focus almost exclusively on helping the mother.  Nurses must often attend to the needs of multiple patients, and are therefore unable to give you constant support.  They are also usually unable to stay throughout your labor, so you may meet a new care-person at every shift change.  A professional doula will support you and your birth partner throughout your entire labor and delivery.

My Philosophy on Labor and Childbirth

In my practice I blend my roles of both massage therapist and doula into a strong, supportive whole. I am intimately familiar with the dynamics of touch and human interaction, which allows me to respond quickly and efficiently to situations that arise while giving you the encouragement you need.

I believe that you as the mother deserve to be supported in whatever setting you choose—be it a hospital, at home, or in a birthing center. Birth can be a beautiful, empowering experience regardless of the location or technology involved.

As your doula, I will attend to your every physical and emotional need during and directly after labor and childbirth, remaining constantly by your side. This benefits the father/birth partner as well, allowing them breaks to be their best in a potentially days-long experience, rather than being the sole supporter.

I use massage, aromatherapy, pressure points, guided relaxation, breathing techniques, and whatever else you need to help you through labor. If necessary, I will also act as a liaison between the midwife or physician and the mother and birth partner, helping you to get the information that you need to allow you to make your own choices. I always employ one of several qualified backup doulas in case of sickness or an extended labor. If you have any questions about the process, would like to schedule a free consultation or would like more information, please call/email.

Training

To become a doula, I completed the Labor Doula program at Birthingway College of Midwifery here in Portland. Birthingway is a well-respected school, with high standards in education and a progressive birthing philosophy. Training involved both the scientific and physical aspects of birthing as well as empathy and mediation, with plenty of information about current techniques used.
